1995 Hyundai Accent,
1,000,000
km
Mohammed Subedar of Brampton Canada
crossed 1,000,000 kilometers in 2005 in his 1995 Hyundai Accent.
The car was purchased used in 1998 with nearly 30,000 kilometers.
It still houses the original 1.5 liter engine and according to Subedar,
"still purrs like a kitten." He uses the auto to deliver packages
for a living and covers about 5,000 kilometers per week. Since
August 5, 2000 Subedar has taken the Accent in for 81 oil changes, 23
transmission services, 17 injector flushes, and eight coolant flushes.
The total cost of maintenance, excluding a few minor repairs has been
$5,721. Subedar has another Accent at home, a purple one, with
only 230,000 kilometers on the odometer. |
1985
Hyundai Pony,
777,305
km
From Matt in Flaxcombe, Canada:
I purchased the car for $200 in April of 2005,
which was my 13th car considering I was only 15 at the time. I cleaned
the carb,
cleaned the gas tank, and changed the oil and other minor things since
it had been sitting behind the previous owner's garage for about 3
years. The second month I hit a deer going 110 km/h and all it did was
push the plastic up on the bumper, the car is like a mini Sherman tank.
The car has been run hard but still comes back for more. You cannot
kill this car. So many memories. Thank you for welcoming my
car on to your site.

1989 Hyundai Sonata,
311,576
miles
From Harry in Sun
Prairie, WI,
USA:
I've been so happy (and surprised) at the durability of this '89! I
bought it new in California, and used Mobil I oil all its life. It came
with us later when we moved to Madison,Wisconsin. We did change the
cylinder head at about 285,000 miles, and of course have done timing
belts, O2 sensors and other wear items as needed. It's the GL model,
standard transmission and cylinder, so not much to go wrong. Also, as
you probably know, the '89 Sonatas were built in Canada, and the
workmanship was excellent. It's kind of odd how
I bought the car. I knew nothing about Sonatas, since '89 was the first
year they were imported to the U.S. I had friends with Excels, but
wasn't impressed except for the great price! At any rate, I was
negotiating with the Honda dealer next door to a Hyundai dealership, and
they were jerking me around, so in a snit I walked next door and bought
the Sonata on impulse. No research or anything, but it was much cheaper
priced than the Accord so I figured it was worth the risk. I look back
on that as a very lucky impulse!
Today we have 1999 and 2001 Sonatas, both GLS, and have the '89 at my
daughter's house for use when we visit there. Consequently its not
getting as much exercise as it used to, but it still starts and runs
smoothly, with good A/C, every time we use it. We couldn't be happier
with it!!!

2000 Kia Sephia,
240,000
miles
From Walt Dunn (galentrot@netscape.net)
Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, USA:
First, I am not surprised at KIA reliability, as I drove in
Korea over a million miles between 1987 and 1994 and NEVER saw a dead
Kia beside the road other than those demolished in accidents. (same for
HYUNDAI also) Their reliability in severe service sold me on their
quality. The only maintenance of significance has been a water pump
change at 200,000 miles and transmission backflushes every 40,000 miles
and oil changes at every 3,000 miles with high mileage formula 10W-30
oil. Major inconvenience is the brake pads on the front which I usually
have to change every 20,000 miles or so but I expect it to improve when
I change the rotors and pads to the new 10 1/2 inch size as recommended
in the factory notes. As long as I am healthy I do most of my mechanical
work myself, but at 67 years old I do have to slow down sometimes.

in Springfield, MO, USA:
Minor stuff that all vehicles eventually need, tires, brakes, timing
belts, water pump, tie rod end and front wheel bearing. Seats are
getting worn(expected)exterior is a little dull. One major repair,
trannie rebuilt at 160,000 miles. Generally I've been fairly pleased
with the car. I drive a lot so I will be looking for something that
get's a little better mileage next time around, probably a VW TDI
diesel. If Hyundai would see fit to import their diesels that they sell
in Europe, I would certainly consider one of them before the VW.

Bought it new @ morrow kia in Beaver Falls, PA with 7 miles on the odo.
I have only done regular maint. as per the owners manual. Along with new
shocks every 100K mi(due to the rough roads). This has far exceeded any
expectation I had for this car, let alone any other. I had only two
warranty claims throughout the 100K warranty period. The vehicle is used
for a courier service along with personal use. The vehicle is still in
excellent condition as it has a full detail once a month(after the time
I spend in it it needs it). Fuel mileage avgs. out to 25 mpg. Everyone I
know is shocked the my car has that many miles and is in such good
shape. I was so impressed I went out and got a 2006.5 EX-V6 in April
from Price Kia in Charlottesville, VA. That bad boy currently has 23,500
miles and has proven to be trouble free so far. I still drive the 02' to

From Happy Hyundai Guy

I purchased this Sonata new. It has been a very reliable car. I
had one problem with rough idling but that was rectified after my
repeated complaints. It has not really required much beyond normal
maintenance, for which I am very happy. Currently, I had my last service
done at Goodyear and they recommended replacing the pulley after the
belt they had replaced 3 days earlier slipped off. They claim this is
because of a pulley problem. Not sure of this or they just want more
money. I had not had any such problem with the car before the belts were
changed. I anticipate this car to be good to at least 200,000 miles
since it uses no oil or has any other mechanical problems.

I bought my 99 Accent hatchback new for only $6495.00 - maybe

always run perfectly. I did change the timing belt, and I take it to
jiffy lube every 3-4000 miles, and it has new tires, but that's it so
far. It is time for new brakes. I hate to put the money into this car -
its black and looks dirty all the time. I have test driven the Yaris and
the Fit and the 2007 Hyundai hatchback, but the Yaris is plasticy and
overpriced, and the Fit drivers seat feels like your sitting in a hole,
and the 2007 Hyundai hatchback does not get the 40 mpg that I get with
the 99 Accent. The Scion Xa pollutes too much. I guess I'll just have to
stick with my reliable 99 Accent until a small hybrid in my price range
hits the market.

they are increadibly cheaply made - I have replaced them 5 times now and
with the rotors this is EXPENSIVE! Also the car corrodes very easily -
the paint is chipped all over the place and the aluminum rims look
terrible. For some reason I consider this car very reliable compared to
other vehicles I have owned (Jeep TJ/Renegade and VW Golf). Would
consider buying another but most likely not due to the high cost and
frequent brake replacement.

1996 Hyundai Sonata 16V GLS,
145,000
km
From member Supervox (kreso@hotmail.com)
in Zagreb, Croatia:
I have driven my 1996 Sonata 2.0 16V GLS
m/t for over a 5 years. I bought it 2nd hand car at my Hyundai dealer
near me. Car was from 1st owner with 60,000 km on odometer!!! Last year
(2005) I decided to build in LPG installation, 'cause of high gasoline
prices in Europe and my mileage is growing in last two years (matter of
extra job...etc.). Now I have bi-fuel vehicle. It burns gasoline
or LPG (liquid propane gas, a mixture of propane and butane gases). My
costs have dropped now by more than 1/2, 'cause I'm burning LPG 99% of
the time!!!
I'm very pleased with my Sonata, the only
thing I would like to add is automatic transmission, but that will wait
for my next car, which probably could be a Hyundai again!!! Now running
137000 km, and 10th anniversary. True this 10 year old car was very well
maintained. Oil, filters, sparkplugs were changed by myself (DIY), and
all other maintenance was left to Hyundai service department near me...
All 4 brake discs are still original, and in good shape, only changed
brake-pads, front twice, rear once. Last year they changed complete
clutch set. At 100000 km was changed whole timing-belt set. This year
I'm prepared to change all 4 shock absorbers, due to a horrible local
roads here in Croatia..., and maybe ignition cables, which are still
original ones!!! Still have no sign of any rust!!! Anyway, after Russian Lada, VW Golf diesel, two GM's (Opel) and two older Mercedes (one
diesel, one gasoline), I could say My Hyundai Sonata is very reliable
car, very equipped too (GLS) it's missing only auto-transmission and
leather!!! I'm planning to drive it for more 3 years and until then I'll
keep you informed about condition of my car and probably will reach over
200000 km...!!! Satisfaction Rating: 9

My Elantra had a defect - it used
to shut off on its own while running at low speeds, had this fixed (for
free) and its been working fine ever since - however, it is getting
older now and I am hearing a lot of weird noises but it still runs well
and I get all the changes I need on a regular basis

1999 Hyundai Accent,
72,700
miles
From Jay in Ontario, Canada
Bought this puppy used at around 70,000 km. Third owner. It's
been a good little car. Have had to replace the alternator and exhaust
system in my time as its owner. The guy who sold it to me said the
exhaust system would never need changing - it was the first to go. A
valuable learning experience there! It's my first car. If it had been
properly taken care of and had rust preventative actions, I am sure it
would have gone a distance further without such troubles. As such, I am
currently looking at buying a brand new 2007 Accent hatchback sport.
Mostly because I'm tired of driving automatic. I want a little red
5-speed! But my '99 will hold a special place in my heart. That is, if
the sale goes through! If not, I have some rust to take care of to keep
my baby looking good for another year or two!
5/3/2007 update:
Thanks George. I ended up buying a new
bright red 2007 Accent 3-door hatchback. Awesome car! Tinted the
windows, put on the bug deflector and window rain guards and it's
looking good! Sadly, the '99 accent is now in the hands of the
local auto wreckers as a parts car.

From
Thom Kalmbach in Renton, WA, USA
First major repairs. Replaced
Alternator. While doing so, also replaced serpentine belt. After the
belt was replaced, pulley was noisy. Had to replace that as well. Never
done timing or water pump. Mechanic suggested. Now replacing that as
well as routine maintenance to prevent any serious damage to engine. I
get about 27 mpg currently. Been top notch car and reliable. Owned for 3
years and put 60K miles on it with having to do nothing but regular oil
changes. Had issue last summer with A/C, but was under warranty at the
time. Condensor needed to be replaced. Satisfaction Rating: 9

Had this car for a summer, bought
from my brother for 200.00, for safety check it needed two holes in
floor fixed, rear brakes, driver's

to a girlfriend, she won't part with it. Still runs, original
